Mission Statement:  The purpose and focus of the Sacred Heart Parish Institute is to prepare and provide the faithful of Sacred Heart Catholic Church with opportunities to learn and develp so that they may be grounded in their Catholic Faith, therefore allowing them give witness to the spiritual tradition of the Catholic Church, while at the same time being able to extend to others the invitation to join in mission of the Church.


Adhereing to the exhortation by John Paul II in his New Evangelization and Ecclesia in America...

The Sacred heart Parish Institute will provide opportunities for further formation in the Roman Catholic Faith. Therefore, further enabling all the faithful to fulfill their Baptismal Promise to proclaim the Good News of Jesus to all. The Institute's vision will be with the focus of the following Biblical Directives:  "Salt of the Earth" (Matthew 5:13); "Light of the World" (John 8:12); and "Go therefore and Baptize" (Matthew 28:19). Zacchaeus is the Patron Saint for the Institute.

God our Father, have mercy on.

Jesus our Lord, hear our prayers and intercede for us.

Holy Spirit, renew us with the fire of your love.

We bless you, we adore you and we glorify you.

We give you thanks for your great love.

Lord, fill our hearts with zeal for souls and love for our neighbor.

Give us courage to go into the world to share the Good News.

Give us wisdom to speak and grant us perseverance.

Lord give your people the desire to know you, to love you, and to serve you.

Open our hearts to hear the Good News.

Feed them and fill them with Faith, Hope , and Love.

We ask this in the name of Sacred Heart of Jesus, your Son.




 The following initiatives come from areas of importance that have been identified within the Community of Sacred Heart Church. These initiatives will act as Projects which will have formation classes and an identified curriculum and syllabus. Attendance will be important as that at the end of each initiative Certificates of Completion will be given and recorded.This Institute will be KEY in educating and forming the faithful of the Community of Sacred Heart Church in Mercedes, Texas. The Sacred Heart Parish Institute will first and foremost strive to clarify the Mission of the Church by feeding its faithful with a deeper understanding of the EUCHARIST,  the HOLY MASS, the CREED, and the GOOD NEWS which is shared in Sacred Scripture.

Level One Adult Catechesis

Sacred Heart Parish  Institute is offering Level One Adult Catechesis every Saturday. English classes will be at 8:00 a.m. and Spanish classes will be at 10:00 a.m. The book that will be used is One Faith, One Lord, A Study of Basic Catholic Belief by Rev. Msgr. John F. Barry, P.A. All four units will be taught simultaneously. If you miss a unit, you can come make it up the next Saturday.

 Unit 4 Our Catholic Faith  


Participants will receive 4 credits for attendance. Credits will count for Sacramental Preparation.

Introduction to Prayer

This course  teaches methods of prayer that is fully based on the Bible. The axis of each of the four sessions is reading and meditation of the Word of God. Participants will learn to go to the texts of the Old and New Testament to meditate and pray.Methods of prayer such as prayerful reading, meditated reading, vocal prayer, written prayer, visual exercises, contemplation and mediation will be discussed. 

Participants will receive 1 credit per session for a total of 3 sessions/3 credits.

Mass 101 and Mass 102

Class 101: The class teaches the order and principle parts of the Mass. Also the meaning of the gestures, prayers, symbols, songs, explanation and names of Liturgical Vessels. It includes an explanation of the physical space and architectural design of churches.  Class 102  goes into a deeper level of understanding of the Mass. Classes run two hours each. Classes are offered in English and Spanish.

Participants receive 2 credits for each section for a total of 4 credits if they attend the four hours.

Liturgy of the Hours Sessions
This class teaches how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. The class is a one four hour session. The is offered in English and Spanish.  The Liturgy of the Hours is “part two” of the official, public worship of the Catholic Church (“part one” being the Mass). It is a category of prayer much different from private devotions, such as the rosary, litanies, chaplets, and even your own conversation with God Those who pray offer a “sacrifice of praise” in the name of, and on behalf of, the Church universal, whether they do so in a group or alone. It consists of a repeating cycle of psalms, biblical canticles, Scripture readings, intercessions, hymns, and other prayers. These are arranged in seven daily sets, or “hours” each to be prayed during a specific phase in the day. Check the bulletin for schedule of classes.

Participants will receive 2 credits per session for a total of 4 credits.

"Catechism of the Catholic Church"
The goal of the Catechism of the Catholic Church class is to help facilitate the lifelong conversion of the whole person to the Father's call to holiness and eternal life. Participants of the catechism are called to witness Christ, the Church, and God's Kingdom of salvation, love, justice, mercy, and peace in the world. This classes will deepen the knowledge of the Catholic faith by learning about foundation teaching on the aspects of the Creed, the Sacraments, the Commandments, and prayer.

Participants will receive 1 credit for session attended.
Salvation History: From Adam to Jesus
This course consists of four session for a total of four credits. The course  teaches the history of Salvation from Adam to Jesus through a demonstration of sketches along with the story of God's covenants in the Bible. It starts from Genesis:"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Gn. 1:1) through the Eucharist-the new and eternal covenant- Jesus Christ.

Salvation History
Salvation History: The Covenants
This course consists of four sessions. It covers the seven covenants between God and his people in salvation history.The Covenant  with Adam, with Noah, with Abraham, with Moses, with David and with Humanity with Jesus Christ. At the end of time, with the general resurrection, comes the fulfillment of the New Covenant. This seventh covenant has significance in that it is the number of completeness in Scripture.It signifies the time when as God's people finish their earthly pilgrimage, they enter into heavenly glory for all eternity.  

Participants will receive 1 credit per session for a total of 4 credits for completion of course.
Confessions Class 101 & 102
The class discusses ways to heal the soul. The following terms are discussed:  penance, contrition, reconciliation, conscience, absolution, confession, venial and mortal sins, forgiveness of sins, soul, body, and a guide when you enter into the confessional along with the prayers.

Participants receive 2 credits for each section for a total of 4 credits if they attend the four hours.

The Ten Virtues of Mary (English/Spanish)

The "Abuelitos" is a group of seniors, both men and women, that meet with Father Eduardo Ortega every 1st  and 3rd Friday of the month from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Abuelitos enjoy delicious  lunch after the meeting, attend adoration of the  Blessed Sacrament and hold very interesting discussions. Prayer and singing is always part of the activities of the group. The group engages in different discussions, learn about the Catholic faith, sing and also pray the Liturgy of the Hours. The Abuelitos have learned a lot from Fr. Ortega and he has learned from the wisdom of the abuelitos. They discuss experiences of how they grew up, how they learned their prayers and how they practiced their Catholic faith while growing up. Every abuelito will say that Fr. Ortega has taught them about the Catholic religion and their faith. Discussions have been funny, interesting and motivational. There are about 12-15 members of the group. Please come join the Abuelitos and learn about the faith so that you can pass it on to your children and grandchildren.

It's All About the Soul (2 credits)
Many people are in trouble because they have forgotten they have a soul. If your soul is not well, your life is not well. The soul needs food, medication, exercise and instruction. What is your soul diet? What do you feed your soul? Come learn how to take care of your soul! Food for the soul is Mass, Eucharist, prayer, and confession.
